active minds as more continental
experimental method doesn't really happen till royal society and academie science in the 17th century - see henry oldenberg (first secretary of the royal society) - first formal public institutions for verifying experimetnal knowledge - started with simple physical things, and minds are much harder, and it takes ages to filter from physics through chemistry etc. to psychology
